Baby Name Poll: Should a judge be able to tell parents to rename their children?
New Zealand law does not allow names that would cause offense to a reasonable person, among other conditions.
Registration officials blocked some names, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter "and tragically, Violence,".
Judge Rob Murfitt made the 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name could be changed from Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.
"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child’s parents have shown in choosing this name," he wrote. "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."
The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her "K" instead.
Should US judges have the same right?
After seeing some of the proposed names on this site, I’m beginning to think so.

No!!
If you don’t like freedom and liberty, move to a third world country where they won’t give you any then.
I’ll keep mine and name my kids whatever I want to, thanks.

I think it’s right – anyone who names their child ‘Talulah does the Hula from Hawaii’ is obviously mentally disturbed, and so making their child the ward of the court is the sensible thing to do, as the parents obviously aren’t up to the responsibility.

Yuppers. It’s ridiculous with the names people come up with. When the kids start school they wont even be able to say their own names. So sad.

no! people should be allowed to call their children whatever they want, the child can always change their own name!
sounds like a job for social services though!

the only way court can change a name is if someone is out to kill you or got out of jail or something like that.

Yes: but only if it is a really stupid/embarrasing/obscene name i.e one that will get the kid teased and jeered at. If people want to name things stupidly they should get a pet; it won’t feel embarrased at its name will it?

Yes…Judges should have the right…why would you set your child up to be bullied from the get go…In Canada…if you put those manes on a birth certificate, they will be rejected right away.

yes since the girl was emarassed.

It’s pretty sad that some parents are so pathetic and self absorbed that they are incapable of naming their child.
I think that if a judge has to step in and a change a name like that the parents need to obviously be sent to parenting classes.
The children have rights not to be made into laughing stocks because of the ignorance of their parents.
